About Enniscorthy Castle

Enniscorthy Castle, in the heart of Enniscorthy town, was originally built in the 13th century, and has been ‘home’ to Norman knights, English armies, Irish rebels and prisoners, and local merchant families. Exploring the development of the Castle and town from its earliest Anglo-Norman origins, there is a special focus on the Castle as a family home. Visit the dungeon to see the rare medieval wall art, The Swordsman, before engaging with daily life in a Norman Castle on the ground floor. The first floor of the Castle offers a glimpse of the life of the Roche family, resident in the Castle from 1903-1951. The work of modernist Irish furniture designer and architect Eileen Gray (born in 1878 just outside the town) is on display on the second floor, along with temporary exhibit of local arts and culture. The roof of the castle is also accessible, with spectacular views of the town, Vinegar Hill, and the Slaney River valley.
